ILUNION SAN MAMÉS GETS UNIVERSAL ACCESSIBILITY CERTIFICATION

Our ILUNION San Mamés hotel has been awarded the AENOR Universal Accessibility certification according to UNE 170001. The custom-built hotel is located next to the Bilbao Intermodal station and is the first in the autonomous region to be run as a special employment centre.

Located in one of Bilbao’s busiest areas, the ILUNION San Mamés is a four-star city hotel with 168 rooms, six of them designed to be fully accessible for people with reduced mobility.

The ILUNION Hotels Accessibility Area was consulted on every stage of the process, from design to fittings, to integrate Design for All and unnoticed accessibility into all its areas, to ensure that the rooms and spaces can be used by all.

With the experience of the ‘Smart Room 501’ accessible room project put into place at the ILUNION Atrium in Madrid, the accessibility elements were chosen based on customer comfort and security, where technology is put in service of accessibility.

The guest room doors and the bathroom doors have an automatic electric opening system, so guests do not need to manipulate them. They also have adjustable beds and other adapted elements, including accessible telephones, light switches in contrasting colours, tables with raised edges, wireless mobile chargers, and courtesy lighting, among others.

Lighting in hallways in progressive, to provide the needed amount of light in a sustainable manner. Room numbers are backlit and also given in Braille, as is all other signage at the hotel.

The hotel is fitted with technical aids such as magnetic loop, wheelchairs for customers, fire alarm with sound signals, reception desk suited for customers with reduced mobility, adapted furniture, contrasting sections on staircases to help people with visual disabilities to find their way, and many more.

Eleven of our hotels now operate as Special Employment Centres. Accordingly at least 70% of the payroll has some kind of disability, making the group an example of labour integration in the tourist sector.
