Dreamers: Alexandra Tuñón
Bipolarity in Relationships
At ILUNION Hotels, we firmly believe that every voice matters and that sharing authentic experiences opens doors and allows us to truly connect with others. That’s why we created “Dreamers”, a video initiative that shines a light on the genuine stories of the people who build our company every day.
This June, our project focuses on Alexandra (Álex), a colleague from the restaurant team at ILUNION Bilbao. Álex shares a powerful and honest testimony about her life with bipolar disorder. She explains how her emotions don’t simply follow the usual ups and downs of daily life—instead, they swing intensely, often for months, from periods of high energy to moments of deep melancholy.
From a young age, Álex sensed that something made her different. Despite her intelligence, she struggled with traditional learning methods and felt misunderstood by those around her—leaving her feeling painfully out of place. Everything changed when she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder as a teenager. It marked a turning point: on one hand, it was a relief to understand that her struggles weren’t a personal failure but a condition shared by many. On the other hand, it meant coming to terms with the stigma and learning to accept a reality that would now be part of her life—and that she continues to navigate every day.
“Realizing that what’s happening to me isn’t my fault has been a huge step” she says candidly.
Álex also shares how this condition has affected her interactions—how emotional intensity can amplify even the smallest of moments. A simple misunderstanding might linger with her for days, while a kind gesture from a stranger on the street can lift her spirits for just as long.
Today, Álex has found a safe and supportive environment at ILUNION Hotels. She has discovered a space of understanding and respect, where she feels free to be herself without the pressure to fit into rigid molds.
“Today, Álex has found a safe and supportive environment at ILUNION Hotels. She has discovered a space of understanding and respect, where she feels free to be herself without the pressure to fit into rigid molds.” , she shares with a smile.
Álex knows she can ask for support without fear of being judged, and that taking a break isn’t a sign of weakness, but an act of self-care.
Ultimately, Álex isn’t trying to be a role model, yet her story is already resonating with many, helping others feel seen and reminding us all that inclusion is something we build together, day by day. And that, without a doubt, is the most meaningful reason to share it.
We invite you to meet Álex.
