Hotel of the Month: ILUNION Islantilla
The first hotel in Islantilla (Huelva) that changed everything
May 13, 2026
Some destinations invent themselves. And then there are destinations that someone decides to build. Islantilla is the latter: in the early nineties, the municipalities of Lepe and Isla Cristina joined forces—and even their names—to create from scratch a tourism landmark on Huelva’s Costa de la Luz that did not previously exist.
The first to arrive was ILUNION Islantilla, in 1992. The destination’s first hotel. More than thirty years later, it remains on the front line. Literally.
A hotel in Islantilla where the sea is accessible to everyone
What distinguishes this hotel on Huelva’s beach is not just its privileged position facing the Atlantic. It is what happens between the hotel and the water.
ILUNION Islantilla features an accessible path to the sea and an amphibious chair available for anyone who wants to swim. It is not an extra or an exception: it is part of what this hotel understands as a vacation. Along with that, a hydraulic chair in the pool, 16 fully adapted rooms out of the 344 available—with continuous flooring in the shower, adjustable grab bars, and turning spaces for wheelchairs—accessible signage, and staff specifically trained in assisting people with disabilities.
The Universal Accessibility certificate here is not just a sign at the reception. It is the reason why this hotel exists as it is.
Location in Islantilla: next to the boardwalk and the shopping center
The hotel occupies one of the best sites in the tourist complex: beachfront, next to the shopping center, alongside the boardwalk, and just a few meters from the 27-hole golf course and the Islantilla Sailing School.
In summer, Islantilla can reach nearly 100,000 inhabitants. The rest of the year, it is the kind of quiet coastal town appreciated by those who know it: no background noise, with the Atlantic always present and that Huelva light that is unlike any other.
The hotel facilities are well-suited for any type of stay: an outdoor beachfront pool, a heated pool for those who prefer the water regardless of the weather, a beach bar, an à la carte restaurant, a café with live music, and four rooms with natural light for events. Plus, an entertainment program—beach volleyball, kayaking, dance classes, night shows—that has its own reputation in the area.
What to see nearby: Costa de la Luz, marshes, and Huelva flavor
Staying at ILUNION Islantilla means having the essence of Huelva within reach.
Isla Cristina and its fish market, one of the most important fishing ports in Andalusia, are just a step away. The Marismas del Río Piedras Natural Site is perfect for hiking trails and bird watching. Ayamonte and the ferry to Portugal are twenty kilometers away. And the local gastronomy does what it does best: white prawns from Huelva, coquinas (wedge clams), cuttlefish with broad beans, and tuna with onions. The hotel restaurant focuses on regional cuisine and caters to intolerances and dietary needs, because here, eating well is also part of the concept of accessibility.
Islantilla beach has accumulated years of Blue Flag status; its waters are calm and its sand is fine and golden. The kind of beach that makes people come back.
The team that makes guests return year after year
The data shows that ILUNION Islantilla leads online reputation rankings in its category and that in 2024 it was recognized as the best hotel for employee experience by the company itself. But those figures have a simple explanation: the team.
A hotel that has stood for over three decades, that remained operational during the 2020 pandemic when others closed, and where there are guests who have been choosing the same place for summer vacations for generations, is not sustained by good facilities alone. It is sustained by people with a genuine vocation and a project—that of the ONCE Social Group—that puts people before any other consideration.
That, in the end, is what makes a destination last.
