With hotels in key observation areas, the chain enables its terraces, extends operating hours, and presents a special cocktail in Barcelona to experience the first total solar eclipse visible in Spain in over a century.

Today, August 12, 2026, the Spanish sky takes center stage in an event that has not occurred over the peninsula in more than a hundred years. As late afternoon falls, the Moon will pass between the Earth and the Sun, plunging a wide belt of the country into a golden twilight. At ILUNION Hotels, we have been preparing for weeks to accompany our guests during this unique moment, and today we do so with one top priority: ensuring no one risks their eyesight to enjoy it. Thousands of certified glasses to protect our guests’ eyesight


Direct observation of the Sun without proper protection can cause severe and irreversible eye injuries. That is why we wanted to ensure no guest misses viewing the eclipse under safe conditions: each of our hotels has distributed 2,000 eclipse glasses certified under the ISO 12312-2 international standard, available in all guest rooms and in baskets on terraces and at hotel entrances.

Conventional sunglasses are not suitable, nor are homemade filters such as X-rays, CDs, or smoked glass. Only certified glasses block the radiation that damages the retina, which is why we committed to providing them directly to our guests.

Open terraces, extended hours, and a special cocktail for the occasion


The eclipse will reach its totality peak between 8:26 PM and 8:33 PM depending on the location, right before sunset. To experience that moment, all of our terraces will host special activities, taking advantage of these spaces as prime vantage points facing the western horizon—the ideal orientation to follow the event with the Sun low in the sky.

We are also extending the operating hours of our common areas so the observation can continue unhurriedly into the night. The day brings a second highlight: the night of August 12 to 13 coincides with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, popular in Spain as the Tears of Saint Lawrence. Because the eclipse takes place during a new moon, the night sky will be exceptionally dark and clear for enjoying the meteor shower.

At ILUNION Barcelona, the celebration comes with its own flavor: our team has created the Eclipsi, a signature cocktail designed for toasted moments during the eclipse—a special touch to complement an evening unlikely to repeat anytime soon.

  • Catalonia (extreme twilight): in Barcelona, where the eclipse will be partial but of extraordinary magnitude, with 99.7% solar obscuration that will completely transform the evening light.
