What is behind the smile: the story of Lucía Verdasco

At ILUNION Hotels, we believe that every personal story has the power to inspire. That’s why we created Dreamers, a project that invites us to look beyond the uniforms and discover the people who give meaning to our company.

Today’s protagonist is Lucía Verdasco, digital business technician. Many know her as “the girl with the smile”, but behind that expression lies a deep story, marked by resilience, sensitivity, and overcoming challenges.

Lucía was born premature, weighing 925 grams, and a cerebral hemorrhage affected the entire left side of her body: clubfoot (equinovarus foot), spasticity in her hand, and small adaptations that no one sees, but that accompany her every day. Even so, she grew up without internal limits, learning to write with two fingers, adjusting every movement, and building a life without giving up anything.

Another major axis of her story is her high sensitivity, a trait that she experienced as a burden for years, especially in a society that often confuses sensitivity with fragility. Over time, she understood that what she had felt as a weight was, in reality, an extraordinary source of leadership, intuition, creativity, and empathy. “There is a resilient Lucía and a sensitive Lucía; both coexist, and both are necessary.”

A safe place to be yourself

Lucía found something at ILUNION Hotels that she had never had before: a space where she doesn’t have to hide who she is. She recalls a day at work when, saturated from absorbing the emotions of her environment, she broke down in tears. Her manager approached and said: “What’s wrong? Are you okay? How can I help you?” For her, that moment was revealing: “No one had ever asked me that before. That’s when I knew I could be myself here.”

Her story is also intertwined with deeply rooted values. She grew up in a family and spiritual environment that helped sustain her during difficult times—such as bullying in school or situations of mobbing in adulthood—and that also taught her to listen to her intuition.

After a life full of ups and downs, Lucía is clear about her dream: that sensitivity stops being seen as a defect and is recognized as the value it truly is. Because—she says— “that is precisely what this society needs.”
