Discover how ILUNION Hotels and Coca-Cola’s Mares Circulares program have removed almost 200 kg of waste from Spanish beaches. A real commitment to sustainability.

We understand sustainability as a real commitment to the environment. Since 2021, we have collaborated with Mares Circulares (Circular Seas), the Coca-Cola Europacific Partners program that promotes the cleaning of coasts and seabeds, citizen awareness, and the circular economy.
Thanks to this alliance, we have consolidated an environmental action line that connects our teams, customers, and local communities with a common purpose: to protect and regenerate marine ecosystems.
An Alliance with Impact: More Than 160 Committed VolunteersSince joining the program, we have carried out five cleanup actions
In different locations along the Spanish coast, managing to remove nearly 200 kilos of waste with the participation of more than 160 volunteers, including employees, clients, and local partners.
The interventions have taken place at La Barrosa Beach (Cádiz), S’Agaró (Girona),and, notably, at Cala Galdana (Menorca), where three consecutive editions have been held, allowing for the removal of more than 130 kilos of waste from the marine environment.
In the latest cleanup, carried out on October 6, 2025, Coca-Cola and ILUNION Hotels gathered 43 volunteers in Cala Galdana, with the collaboration of the San Francisco de Asís School, the Ferreries Senior Citizens Club, and the Ferreries Town Council, managing to remove almost 19 kilos of waste.

From Waste to Resource: The Recycled Bench of Cala Galdana
The commitment to the circular economy is one of the foundations of the Mares Circulares project. All materials collected during the cleanups are classified and processed for subsequent recycling, with the technical support of the Chelonia Association.
In 2024, this effort materialized in the installation of an urban bench made from recycled plastic on the promenade of Cala Galdana, manufactured with 30% PET, 50% recycled polyethylene, and 20% plastic from fruit crates. This bench, one of the 16 delivered across Spain, symbolizes the value of collaboration and the transformation of waste into new resources useful for the community.
“Our alliance with Mares Circulares reflects a way of understanding sustainability through action and in the most local environment. It is not just about cleaning beaches, but about raising awareness, involving our teams, and promoting a model that turns waste into resources,” explains Elena Martín Cuesta, Director of Sustainability and Excellence at ILUNION Hotels.
Our Blue Commitment: Beyond Beach Cleanups
The initiatives framed within Mares Circulares are integrated into our “Blue Commitment,” an action line linked to the environmental strategy of the ILUNION Hotels Strategic Plan 2024–2027.
This commitment is reinforced by milestones such as our adhesion to the B Corp community and BREEAM certification in 90% of our hotels, consolidating a model of responsible, regenerative, and inclusive tourism.
Our purpose, “Building a better world with everyone included,” is also translated into a business model that seeks to generate a positive impact on people and the natural environment.
