More than 8 tons of used oil serving the inclusion of our people

During 2022, thanks to the partnership with the Solidarity Oil initiative, ILUNION Hotels generated €1,009 in donations as a result of the proper management of used vegetable oil at its establishments, totaling 8,354 kg.

The benefits of this charitable action were allocated to the ONCE Foundation, which promotes full social inclusion for people with disabilities; and to the “Learn Without Barriers” Academy, which offers training aimed at these young people. Solidarity Oil is an initiative of the NGO RastroSolidario and the company Remittel, responsible for the management and collection of biowaste for its subsequent transformation and belonging to Selev Biogroup. “We are especially proud to participate in an action with a dual purpose, putting the solidarity aspect at the service of the circular economy and the reuse of used oil, and vice versa,” said Elena Martín Cuesta, Sustainability Director of ILUNION Hotels, highlighting this symbiosis as “a perfect cooperation that improves lives and highlights a sustainable and essential service.”

To carry out this donation, used cooking vegetable oil was collected from the different establishments of the hotel chain throughout 2022, a process that gave a second life to all this oil by reusing it to produce biodiesel.

“This initiative, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the UN 2030 Agenda, is a tool to help reduce global warming,” says Norberto Soro, manager of Remittel. Besides coordinating this action directly related to reducing environmental impact, the company specialized in the comprehensive collection and management of biowaste continuously carries out actions that connect the social and environmental aspects through oil collection.

Employability among vulnerable groups

In addition to allocating the economic benefits of this initiative to the different projects carried out by the ONCE Foundation nationwide, another part was directed to the “Learn Without Barriers” project, the first online academy aimed at young people with intellectual disabilities. “This donation is a great boost for the employment inclusion of people with disabilities, a group that faces disadvantages when trying to obtain stable and quality jobs,” explained José Ramón Cuesta, president of the NGO RastroSolidario.

From the same organization, they also emphasized that this partnership aligns perfectly with their mission. “We work for an economic model that includes all people and respects the environment,” say RastroSolidario when referring to an action that will benefit various groups of people with disabilities.
