Tourism and water: a sustainable challenge.
ILUNION Hotels presents the report Water and Sustainability in the Tourism Sector
September 3, 2025
Water is one of the great challenges for tourism in the present and in the future. Aware of this, ILUNION Hotels has published the report Water and Sustainability in the Tourism Sector, an analysis that addresses how tourist activity impacts water resources and what innovative solutions can help mitigate that effect.
The document is framed within the company’s Competitive Intelligence Observatory and responds to a clear commitment: to integrate sustainability and innovation as a strategic pairing to drive more responsible tourism.
A joint perspective from sustainability and innovation
The report was prepared by the teams of Innovation, Sustainability, the technical area, and operations professionals, with the endorsement of the consultancy Opinno, a specialist in innovation. Its methodology combines internal analysis, comparison with the hotel sector, and scouting of startups and research projects.
“We want to identify trends, startups, and initiatives that can be applied in different areas of the company and contribute to a more efficient management of water,” highlights Carlos Bello, director of Innovation and Technology at ILUNION Hotels.
From the Sustainability area, the importance of awareness and joint action is emphasized: “Water is a vital resource for society and also for tourism. Our commitment is to manage it responsibly to preserve and promote the advancement of solutions for the benefit of the planet,” adds Elena Martín, director of Sustainability and Excellence at ILUNION Hotels.
Data that invites reflection
The report indicates that, although tourism consumes less water than other sectors, it does so in areas of high water stress, especially in summer, when the pressure on resources is greater. Among the most relevant findings are:
- The water consumption of a tourist can be six times greater than that of a resident.
- More than 70% of Spanish territory is at risk of desertification.
- 69% of the water consumed by tourism comes from regions with a medium to extremely high level of water stress.
Knowledge to share
The objective of this report is to raise awareness, inspire, and activate dialogue with the tourism sector and with society. ILUNION Hotels wants to contribute knowledge, generate debate, and encourage more companies to adopt responsible measures in water management.
This work will be ongoing: the Competitive Intelligence Observatory will continue to publish periodic analyses on key trends for the future of tourism.
