Wolf Project, shared nature – by ILUNION Hotels


Wolf Project, shared nature is ILUNION Hotels environmental conservation initiative, created to protect one of the most emblematic — and most misunderstood — species of Iberian wildlife.

Together with the Iberian Wild Track association, the company is driving a three-year collaboration focused on the Sierra de la Culebra, in Zamora, to generate scientific knowledge about the Iberian wolf and build a real model of coexistence with extensive livestock farming.

Caring for people means caring for the environment they live in. This project broadens our understanding of inclusion: protecting species, supporting rural communities and preserving the balance of the land we share.

The challenge: coexisting without excluding


The Iberian wolf and extensive livestock farming have shared the same land for centuries. Today, however, that coexistence needs new tools.

The project works across five monitoring areas in the Sierra de la Culebra — La Ermita, Villanueva de Valrojo, La Matona, the Villardeciervos-Boya sector and Codesal — and studies five livestock farms in the area: two with recurring damage attributed to the wolf, and three with almost no incidents, which serve as a comparative benchmark.

This comparison makes it possible to identify which factors — herd management, preventive measures, the characteristics of the surroundings — really influence attacks, and to design solutions tailored to each farm rather than generic ones. It is a three-year project with one clear end goal: a model of coexistence that can be replicated in other areas.

Year 1 — Diagnosis

Tracking, direct observation and camera trapping to assess the state of the wolf populations. The project also analyses the damage recorded on each livestock farm and the condition of the habitat following the wildfires.

Year 2 — Preventive measures

Specific solutions are designed and put in place for each case: advice on livestock management, improved enclosures and fencing, additional guardian mastiffs, or adjustments to grazing routines. Monitoring of the wolf populations continues in parallel.

Year 3 — Assessment and model

The project evaluates how damage has evolved, the conservation status of the species and the effectiveness of the measures applied, in order to establish the final model of coexistence.

This project connects directly with the way ILUNION Hotels understands sustainability: as a responsibility that goes beyond hotel operations. This balance is built step by step, with data and with the people who experience the land every day. The wolf is as much a part of the Sierra de la Culebra as those who live and work there.
