Perfect in her imperfection

There are stories that don’t begin with a decision, but with something that simply happens. And from that point on, everything is about learning to live with it.

Lucía Loscertales’ story—a receptionist at ILUNION Romareda—began when she was just a few months old, following viral encephalitis that left her with permanent physical effects. However, for her, there has never been a “before” to compare herself to. The body she has is the only one she has ever known, and from that foundation, she has built her way of being in the world.

In that process, her environment has been key. Especially her family, who instilled in her from a young age an idea that has shaped her life: being “perfect in her imperfection.” A way of understanding difference not as a barrier, but as part of one’s identity.

Learning to hold on

But beyond childhood, there are moments that change the course of any story. In Lucía’s case, the sudden loss of her partner, just before the lockdown, marked a turning point. Facing grief in solitude, unable to leave the house, forced her to confront a reality for which no one is ever prepared.

It was then that she found in climbing something more than just a sport. It became a way to channel what she was feeling and, at the same time, a metaphor for her own life: moving forward step by step, adapting to every difficulty, and understanding that it’s not always about arriving first, but about continuing to climb.

A place to grow

Her professional career has also been part of that journey. After completing her internship at ILUNION Romareda, she decided to stay and has now been at the hotel for seven years. There, she found an environment where confidence in her work has also bolstered her personal security, in a space where disability is lived with naturalness.

Today, Lucía is clear about an idea that runs through her entire story: the importance of living in the here and now. Because while some things cannot be changed, the way we choose to live them can be. And in that balance, between what happened and what is yet to come, she continues to build her own path. Step by step. Just like in every climb.
