We are committed to sustainable innovation: we installed the first LFC biodigester in a hotel in Spain

March 13, 2025

At ILUNION Hotels, we continue to strengthen our commitment to the environment—this time through a technological solution that transforms organic waste into greywater.

The Botánica restaurant at ILUNION Alcora Sevilla is the setting for this test project, which aims to move us closer to a zero-waste model across our hotels.

This technology, developed in Silicon Valley, enables us to reduce up to 36.5 tons of waste per year and avoid the emission of 150 tons of CO₂—equivalent to the carbon absorption capacity of approximately 7,500 trees annually.

At ILUNION Hotels, we’ve taken another step toward the circular economy by installing the first LFC biodigester in a hotel in Spain. This innovative solution, manufactured by Power Knot in the heart of Silicon Valley, has been implemented at our ILUNION Alcora Sevilla hotel, specifically in the Botánica restaurant.

This advancement is part of our ongoing commitment to a more sustainable hospitality model—where every step matters.

This trial allows us to continue exploring innovative solutions that bring us closer to our goal of minimizing waste in our hotels. Purpose-driven innovation is key to moving toward a more sustainable tourism industry, aligned with the future of the sector.”.

stated our Director of Sustainability,
Elena Martín Cuesta

Technology to transform waste into resources

The LFC biodigester uses aerobic processes to break down food waste and convert it into greywater within 24 hours. Once treated, this water can be used for tasks such as irrigation, thus closing the resource recovery cycle.

In addition to preventing this waste from ending up in landfills, this technology reduces emissions of polluting gases like methane, decreases the need for transportation and storage, and improves hygiene in waste management areas. It also optimizes operational efficiency by facilitating cleaner and safer environments.

One step further on our journey toward zero waste

During the first 37 days of use, the system processed 1,371 kg of organic waste and avoided the emission of 5.8 tons of CO₂. If these results are maintained, we will be able to avoid more than 150 tons of CO₂ annually—an impact equivalent to that generated by 7,500 trees.

The system also features an intelligent real-time monitoring system that allows us to collect key data to continuously improve waste management and make more effective decisions in the future.

Leading by example

This pilot project marks the beginning of a path we hope to replicate in other hotels within the company. At ILUNION Hotels, we continue to invest in technologies that not only comply with the strictest regulations but also help us build a tourism model increasingly respectful of the environment.

We are convinced that sustainability is not a trend but a way of understanding hospitality. Caring for people and the planet is part of our purpose, and with actions like this, we want to demonstrate that it is possible to innovate with positive impact.

At ILUNION Hotels, we understand sustainability as part of our DNA. This new milestone reflects our commitment to purpose-driven innovation as we move closer to the goal of more responsible, accessible tourism with a continually lower environmental impact,”.
