The #somosheroes team from ILUNION Hotels, the hotel chain of the ONCE social business group and its Foundation, participated on October 21 in the solidarity race ‘100×100 CiclaMadrid’, a cycling event that covered the 100 km separating Torrelaguna from San Lorenzo del Escorial, with all proceeds donated to a social cause.
For this challenge, the team was made up of ten people, five of whom have some type of disability. Most of the members were employees of ILUNION Hotels and ILUNION. Miguel Silvestre, a former professional cyclist, acted as captain.
One hundred percent of the funds raised through registration fees were donated to the social cause chosen by the winning team. In their case, the ILUNION Hotels team rode to raise funds for Down Madrid, doing their part to support the family, social, educational, and workplace inclusion of people with Down syndrome.
THE TEAM
The #somosheroes team was composed of Josefina Guimarey, Juan Carlos Arastey, Jorge Orejón, Miguel Ángel Carrascoso, Juan Antonio García, David López, Iván Ojeda, Salvador Morillo, Alejandro Romeu, and Miguel Silvestre.
They are united by a common goal: to prove that they are “extraordinary people used to breaking down barriers and working together to achieve goals,” they say.
Captained by Silvestre—who also accompanied this team in the GAES Pilgrim Race and has shown great dedication to the integration of people with disabilities through sports—the #somosheroes team pedaled to show that there are no limits or obstacles that can hold them back.
The Commercial and Marketing Director of ILUNION Hotels, David López Pachón, expressed his pride in belonging to this team and to ILUNION Hotels, “which champions diversity and the integration of people with disabilities as a business model.”
For López, this event is “a life experience and a way to make visible what, to many, is invisible.”
ILUNION Hotels has a workforce where 40% are people with disabilities. “Integration and solidarity are part of our DNA,” guarantees its Commercial and Marketing Director.
This sporting activity reflects the daily, collaborative effort of the company’s employees toward social integration and achieving a world without barriers. Furthermore, it is a way to showcase and value the resilience and dedication of people with disabilities.
