ILUNION Hotels certifies its hotels under the BREEAM international standard
March 03, 2026
ILUNION Hotels consolidates its sustainability leadership by completing the certification under the international BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) standard across all its establishments. With this milestone, it becomes the first hotel company in Spain to endorse 100% of its asset portfolio through this prestigious independent assessment system.
A path of rigor and operational excellence
What began as a pilot project in 2023 was extended to the entire portfolio in 2024. Following an exhaustive auditing process between 2025 and 2026, the company has successfully completed the certification of its 32 hotels.
The applied scheme, BREEAM In-Use, allows for the standardization of environmental criteria in both urban and holiday hotels, regardless of whether they are owned or leased. This technical methodology evaluates critical aspects such as:
- Energy efficiency and responsible water management.
- Biodiversity protection and waste management.
- Indoor environmental quality, guaranteeing guest well-being.
“BREEAM allows us to have an objective and measurable methodology to evaluate the environmental performance of our buildings. Beyond the certification, it provides us with a management tool that helps us identify areas for improvement, optimize resources, and ensure that our standards are maintained and evolve over time,” says Elena Martín Cuesta, Director of Sustainability and Excellence at ILUNION Hotels.
Assurance and transparency for the conscious traveler
Certifying 100% of the hotels is not just a technical achievement; it is a declaration of transparency. Thanks to the support of specialized consultants such as SAVILLS and CBRE, the company guarantees that every stay meets the most demanding levels of environmental respect.
As it is a system involving external audits and periodic reviews, ILUNION Hotels ensures a cycle of continuous improvement, professionalizing sustainable management within the Spanish tourism sector.
A forward-looking business model
For the chain’s leadership, this step is the natural evolution of its corporate DNA. In the words of José Ángel Preciados, CEO of ILUNION Hotels:
“Achieving BREEAM certification across all our hotels is a consistent step with our strategic vision and business model. We are committed to independent and rigorous standards that endorse our environmental performance and reinforce our commitment to responsible and transparent management.”
With this global certification, ILUNION Hotels positions itself as the main driver for the adoption of international standards in Spanish hospitality, proving that profitability and respect for the planet are two sides of the same coin.
